What is ZRA Smart Invoice?
Smart Invoice is the Zambia Revenue Authority's software-based electronic invoicing system, which replaced legacy Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs). It became mandatory from 1 July 2024 for VAT-registered taxpayers, and covers other tax types including insurance premium levy, tourism levy and rental income tax. Every sale is transmitted to ZRA with control data and a verifiable code on the document.
Who must comply and how
All VAT-registered businesses must issue invoices through Smart Invoice; input VAT claims require a valid Smart Invoice document. ZRA offers several connection routes:
Smart Invoice connection options
| Option | Best for |
| Virtual Sales Data Controller (VSDC) / API | Businesses invoicing from accounting software or ERP — PeppyBooks uses this route |
| Smart Invoice desktop client | Single-computer businesses |
| Online portal | Very small taxpayers with occasional invoices |

Why software beats standalone devices
With EFDs gone, the question is whether to bolt a fiscal tool onto your billing or run billing and compliance in one system. A standalone tool means typing every sale twice and matching two systems at month-end. PeppyBooks issues the compliant document and posts your books entry in the same action — one system, one truth, with offline queueing for connectivity gaps and local support in Zambia (+260 97 9644669).
