What is Ghana's e-VAT system?
The Ghana Revenue Authority's e-VAT programme requires VAT-registered businesses to issue invoices through a Certified Invoicing System (CIS) that transmits transaction data to GRA in real time. Rollout began in October 2022 with large taxpayers and continues in phases toward all VAT-registered businesses. Compliant invoices carry GRA control data and a QR code your customers can verify.
Who must comply?
GRA is phasing in e-VAT by taxpayer segment — large taxpayers first, followed by medium and small. If you are VAT-registered, you should expect an onboarding notice and plan ahead: integration through a certified system takes days, not months, when your billing software already supports it. Input VAT claims and expense deductions increasingly depend on e-VAT-compliant documents across the supply chain.
How to choose e-VAT software
- GRA-aligned real-time transmission built into billing — no re-typing into a separate tool
- Coverage of invoices, credit notes and POS receipts on one flow
- Offline queueing with automatic retry for connectivity gaps
- VAT levies handled correctly (NHIL, GETFund, COVID levy where applicable)
- Full books behind every invoice so VAT returns match to accounts
